The White Witch for Turning Tides

I’m so pleased to finally share this new piece of work, created for The Turning Tides Project CIC in Crediton. This summer I was commissioned to create a White Witch for their garden, celebrating the life of Lindsey, a much-loved community pioneer and Non-Executive Director who was such an important part of the Turning Tides family.

The Turning Tides team described Lindsey as “the wisest and kindest of white witches” — someone who always supported and took care of them. This became the inspiration behind the sculpture: a strong, protective figure with a deep connection to nature, watching over the garden and the people within it.

One of the most personal elements of the sculpture is a heart made from steel and copper wire, which I embedded within the woven willow. Although hidden inside, it represents the love and care at the heart of the project. At the recent festival day, I installed the White Witch in her new home and invited the community to help complete her. Together, we wove hearts onto her skirt and added flowers and herbs to her hands.

It was incredibly special to see people contribute to the sculpture, making her not just a piece of artwork, but something created and held by the community. I’ve loved creating this work and celebrating a woman who clearly meant so much to so many people. The White Witch now has her home: watching over, protecting and remembering Lindsey.
